Design Korea 2007 International Conference held at COEX Grand
Ballroom on November 29th to 30th was a great success.

In this year’s Design Korea International Conference, ‘public design’
and ‘design management’ that are the issues of this age were
discussed by world-class designers and scholars.

In the international conference on public design on November
29th, David KESTER, Chief Executive of the Design Council delivered
the keynote speech. World-class designers from home and abroad
including Peter ZEC, KWON Young-gull, Claudio GERMAK,
Odile ROYER, KIM Uk and Yokokawa SHOJI served as speakers
and contributed to spreading global design trends.
In the international conference on design management on
November 30th, Thomas LOCKWOOD, President of DMI,
Alison RIEPLE, professor of Westminster University,
CHUNG Kyung-won, Professor of KAIST delivered keynote speeches,
and the speaker selected by DMI Academy Journal,
Joel PIASKOWSKI, Chief Designer of Hyundai Motor’s
American Design Center, KIM YoungJun, President of
Samsung Electronics, HWANG Sung Gul, Representative of
Motorola Korea Seoul Studio, CXD, KIM Seung Min,
General Manager of Samsung Engineering & Construction,
CHOI Eim-sik, vice president of GS Engineering & Construction,
CHOI Mi-Kyung, Design Director of KTF and Sooyong JOH,
Chief Officer of NHN discussed the ways to lead the global design trend

The "Legacy for the Future" Design Awards was created
in order to honor designers, corporations, associations and
nations for their contributions to human comfort, protection
of the environment in the international community, and
the establishment of cultural identity. The judges for the
awards are mainly heads of domestic and foreign design
associations and world-class design experts. Four select
exhibits among 650 exhibits displayed in the World Best
Design Exchange Zone are the candidates for the award.

In this year, the top four exhibits were selected by nine
judges: Ralph Wiegmann (Managing Director of iF, Germany),
Andrea Dichiara (professor in product design at IDAS),
Chang Dong-ryon (President of ICOGRADA), Anne Marie Boutin
(President of APCI), Anna Bates (reporter at ICON Magazine),
Choi Si-young (President of Korean Society of Interior Designers),
Uli Marchesteiner (CEO of ADI-FAD, Spain),
Jia Jiang(Editor of ART AND DESIGN PUBLISHING UNITED) and
LEE Soon-in (Professor of Hongik University).
“Human Comfort Design Award” was bestowed on 1C30
Trias prosthetic feet, the winner of Red Dot Design Award
(Germany), “Eco-Friendly Design Award” was bestowed on
Miss Folding (Folding coffee table Outdoor/Indoor),
the winner of Observeur du Design (France), and
“Cultural Identity Design Award” was bestowed on China set
Bohemia White, the winner of This Year’s Design Awards (Czech).

In addition, visitors can participate in selecting the winner of the “Legacy for the Future Design Award” 2007 by vote in the exhibition hall during the exhibition period.

Design Korea 2007 has kicked off at COEX Atlantic Hall on
November 29th with the overture of “World Best Design
Exchange” which has brought a lot of state-of-the-art designs
from home and abroad.

Choi Hyun-jung, announcer and public ambassador for design
at Korea Institute of Design Promotion was the host of the
opening ceremony which started with a performance of opening
the window of communication by the celebrated Dood Rock
percussion troupe. Notable guests including Kim Young-ju,
minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy, Lee Il-kyoo,
President & CEO of Korea Institute of Design Promotion,
Peter Zec, Red dot President and David Kester, President
of Design Council attended the opening ceremony.
At the end of the ceremony, the road of communication to
World Best Design Exchange was opened by cutting the tape.
This exhibition has its significance in that it will raise the
design standard of Korea by comparing Korean designs with
other world-class designs and support business activities
among domestic and foreign companies and design firms.
This exhibition will also contribute to Korea’s takeoff to
the design leader in the world by giving its people some
insight in design.

The 9th Convention on Design Promotion to foster the design
industry, which is the alchemy of the 21st century, was held
at COEX Grand Ballroom on November 29th.

Choi Hyun-jung, announcer and public ambassador for design
at Korea Institute of Design Promotion was the host of the
opening ceremony which consisted of the presentations on
development strategies of design industry for 2008,
the presentations on successful cases of Korean Design Awards
and Good Design (GD) Selection and Korean Design Awards
and Good Design (GD) Selection ceremonies.

In the management field, Woong Jin Coway, Hyundai
Engineering & Construction, GB Style, Samkwang System
and Seongnam City were awarded, and in the individual field,
Kwon Young-gull (Seoul National University), Han Seok-woo
(Seoul National University of Technology), Kim Seung-min
(Samsung Engineering & Construction) and Ahn Hoe-young
(Korean Society of Interior Designers) were awarded.
The winners of Good Design include GS Engineering &
Construction, Samsung Electronics, Samsung Engineering &
Construction and LG Electronics.

Anthony Dickens was born in Dorset in 1975.
He studied Fruniture and Related Product Design at
Buckinghamshire and Chilterns University College,
graducating in 1997.
In 1998 he was part of the British Council's Mo-Billy exhibition
in Milan. This week heralded the start of a partnership with
JAM Design Anthony set up his own studio in 1998, working with
clients usch as REd Bull and Venve Clicauot, who were keen to use
innovative product design to promote their brands.
He believes that product design communicates to its targeted
audience more effectively than tranditional passive advertising.
Over the past two years he has broadened his approach to explore
domestic product and furniture design. He launched the Origami
table range, winning a design bursary from Liberty and all Elle

Han River Cruise

Han River cruise roundtrip from Yeoeuido, which has magnificent

view, winds through the heart of the nation and passes through

Seoul, bisecting the capital. The water is clean and over 20 miles
of the riverbank have been transformed to include paths, gardens,

and recreational facilities along the river's landscape.

The river cruise is a must for visitors to Seoul.

Tourists can enjoy a leisurely view of Weoul's modern skyline

and Seoul Tower on top of Mt. Namsan.

Night Shopping (Dongdaemun market)

Ever since its opening in 1905, Dongdaemun Market has been

one of the major amrkets in Korea. Specializing in wholesale

clothing, the market has grown large, having more than 20

shopping malls. A full range of fashion items that cover from

head to toe, are found in Dongdaemun Market at inexpensive

prices. Just name it and you shall find it!

No wonder that the market is always crowded with retailers,

foreigners, customers and tourists.

Jeju Island

You can experience volcanic island and lava tubes inscribed

on UNESCO World Hertage in Jeju island.

Korea's largest island, is only an hour's flight south of Seoul.

As a result of its isolated location and romantic tropical

image, Jeju has become a favorite retreat with honeymooners

and tourists. Because the island was formed by volcanic

eruption, a landscape of striking contrasts was created.

"Legendary hilla" Gyeongju

The Gyeongju Historic Areas has been inscribed on UNESCO

World Heritage. Gyeongju was the capital of the Shilla kindom.

The korean peninsula was ruled for nearly a thousand years

by the Shilla dynasty, and the sites and monuments

in and around Kyongju (including the holy mountain of Namsan)

bear outstanding testimony to its cultural achievements.

The areas contain a remarkable concentration of outstanding

examples of Korean Buddhist art, in the form of sculptures,

relief, pagodas, and the remains of temples and palaces from

the flowering, in particular between the 7th and 10th centuries,

of this form of unique artistic expression, The Kyongju Historic

Areas contain a number of sites and monuments of exceptional

significance in the development of Buddhist and secular

architecture in Korea.

Gyeongbok Palace

Gyeongbok Palace was built in 1395 by King Taejo the founder

of Joseon Dynasty as the primary residence for the royal family.

Among the five palaces in Seoul, it is the largest and most

beautiful in architectural style.

Changdeok Palace

Changdeok Palace is one of UNESCO's World Heritages.

A serenely exquisite garden, Secret Garen 'Biwon' was

used by the king and royal family during the Joseon Dynasty

as a place for relaxation. It holds many ponds, pavilions and

wooded areas containing thousand-year-old trees.

A short walk to Insadong, a narrow street lined with antique

stores and modern art galleries where can wander and browse

at leisure.

Korean Folk Village

The hwaseong is a 3.2miles (5.4km) fortress made of stone
reaching form Mt.Paldalsan to the west. There is a small
mountain in the east, and a stream flows from north to
south in between the eastern and western hillsides.
Also there are 4 gates in the fortress, on the east, west,
south, and north sides.
Korean Folk Village is a living museum that recreates the
lifestyle of several centuries ago. There are potters, weavers,
blacksmiths, and other artisans who practice their trades
in traditional fashion.
There are also 240 traditional homes and a small
amphitheater for music and folk dances.

World Performance COOKING'NANTA

'NANTA' has been on world tour since 1997 including broadway
and It's on-verbal performance of reckless rhythms that
dramatize customary Korean percussion in a strikingly
comedic stage show. Integrating uniquely korean traditional
tempos with a western performance style, NANTA storms
on stge into a hug kitchen where four capricious cooks are
preparing a wedding banquet. While COOKIN', they turn all
kinds of kitchen items - pots, pans, dishes, knives,
chopping board, water bottles, even brooms and each other
- into percussion instruments.
Rhythm rules and aduiences are swept along in the primitive
sound explosion and actions on stage.
Though the performance is built primarily on captivating rhythms
and has very few spoken words, audiences of all ages and
nationalities can enjoy the plot and dramas.

Eating out is one of the great pleasures of visiting Korea,
a country famous for its diverse native dishes. Korean suisine is
nutritious, well balanced and low in calories as it involves a wide
variety of vegetables and fermented foods.
Bulgogi(marinated, barbecued beef) and Bibimbap (steam rice
mixed with vegetables) are the most famous.

TIP

Seoul selected as 'World Design Capital' for 2010

Ahead of the DESIGN KOREA 2007 which will be held on COEX,
Seoul from Nov. 29, Seoul has been chosen as the
'World Design Capital (WDC) for the year 2010.

The World Design Capital (WDC) project is biennial international
competition created by Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, President of the ICSID,
to identify and recognize the cities that have effectively used design
to revive the community and improve the quality of life for its
citizens. Seoul has been designated as the World Design Capital for
the year 2010 T the closing ceremony of the 2007 international
Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) General Assembly
held in San Francisco, USA On Oct. 20 (local time),
Seoul metropolitan Government conveyed on Sunday.

Prof Dr. Peter Zec, ICSID President, WDC Founding Chair and
WDC 2010 jury member stated "Seoul's remarkable achievements
in design-led development- particulary in the past decade-
exemplify the spirit of the WDC designation."
Marc Newson, award-winning designer and WDC 2010 jury member
stated "Seoul's economic figures and its position as the center of
South Korea's rapid development speaks for Seoul's enhanced
global status as design city."

Prof Dr. Peter Zec, ICSID President, will attend DESIGN KOREA
2007 as a speaker and present "Public Design and its influence
on the economic development of a city."

Eye-Witness, model Lace (sunglasses)

Designer: Prtrick Hoet

Manufacturer: Theo, Belgium

Lace is a sunglass but at the same time a poetic interpretation

of old lace work. Furthermore, it is sound from an industrial, optical

point of view. The pattern was converted into a computer file by

means of a traditional technique. This file was then transferred

to a stainless steel plate by means of a photographic etching process.

There are two versions. The first one is without sunglasses, which

allows the wearer to see through the lace work. The other version

is a model for non-believers: with sunglasses on which the lace

pattern has been reproduced by means of a vacuum technique.

What is special about this version is that the wearer cannot see

the pattern.

This is the smallest printer design in the word which will be
presented by China Lucky Film Group Corporation. As a famous
company, it is LUCKY's first time of product developing.
The whole design team was gathered from 3 different countries,
including USA (technology), Japan (hardware) and China
(Design Consultant). The orientation of the printer is the youth
who enjoy fashion & interesting items and the businessman with
high quality life. With the leading technology of thermal-print,
user could easily enjoy the printing anywhere & anytime by
connecting the pocket-printer with cell-phone, PDA or laptop by
Bluetooth and transmitting images to print out.
The storage of printer is 10 sheets, and the built-in chargeable
battery which could support 30 prints. The standard size of printing
paper is 76mmX50mm, and there are two types of the paper to
choose, one is the traditional printing paper, the other one is
the special paper with pastern on the back. Customer could use
the special printing paper to create all kinds of individuation posters.
The unique printing technology gives us a wide design space.
in order to design a brand-new printer, we are trying to make the
shape comfortable to grasp and portable.
Ergonomics is another very important issue we have considered.
With this unique technology, we tried to create innovative and
firendly user experiece for Lucky Film.

Chopstick Container in the shape of a folk house theme of

the design: The Olympic Games is shared by every household

Chopsticks are the dining utensils with unique Chinese

characteristics. In addition, window lattice is one of the features

of the architecture of quadrangle dwellings in Beijing.

The product takes the quadrangle courtyard of Beijing as the

designing element with the characteristic window lattice,

most typical of Beijing quadragle coutainer, the emblem of

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games engraved on the lower part of the

container and the top cover designed as the roof of a courtyard house.

And there are grooves in the shape of drainage holes of the

quadrangle courtyard on both sides underneath the bese of the

container. The top cover of the container can be opened.

When closed, the container looks like a Beijing folk house with

chopsticks stored inside. In addition, it also serves as a delicate

packaging. The product is available in a set of three made up

of roofs and window lattice of different styles.

The product is made of natural camphor wood and pine

characterized by its green and environmental friendly features.
